In British Vogue’s youthquake portfolio in the February 2022 issue, the model and actor Devon Ross says that the one thing she would change about the world is to bring back George Harrison. “We need more people like him,” notes the rock chick whose beauty muse is Keith Richards. While you’re most likely to see Ross, who lives with Nick Cave’s son Earl in West London, wearing something stolen from her own father’s tour wardrobe (Craig Ross plays lead guitar for Lenny Kravitz), she has lent H&M her bohemian flair for its latest Studio campaign.
Shot around London’s docks, the happy-making clothes stand out like a jolt of electricity against the gloomy backdrop (something Devon is still getting used to since relocating from LA to the UK). Riotous leopard coords and retina-searing green silk separates become cool-girl daywear on the 22-year-old rising star. “I always stumble across fabulous things in H&M,” says the young woman who stocks up on basics at the high-street retailer, but is always tempted by new-season fripperies, such as the silver tasselled little black dress she plans to wear with her current obsession: go-go boots. “They instantly feel powerful, happy and sexy,” she smiles over Zoom, all feline eyeliner and that signature full fringe.
If H&M Studio’s spring/summer 2022 campaign is intended to be a paean to mood-boosting self-expression, it’s trawling eBay and Etsy that gives Devon a buzz. “I’m not the most tech savvy,” says Ross, “But I’m patient, and I look when I feel like looking.” With one eye on Kate Moss’s style and a forever crush on Anita Pallenberg, Ross never strays far from the indie aesthetic she and her boyfriend, who make music together, do so well.
“My dad was obsessed with the ’60s so I kind of didn’t have a choice but to get into it,” says the self-professed extrovert. Her best piece of fashion advice? “Wear it with confidence and no one will question you, because they’re more concerned with what they are wearing.” Oh, and a loud jacket never fails to elevate even the most lacklustre outfit. “It’s like an Old Hollywood look to wear a nightie and a fur coat,” she asserts.
With myriad nostalgic references to draw upon, it’s no surprise this old soul’s modelling career is grounded in the inspiring work of ’70s supers, like Jerry Hall and Jamie King, who always looked “so cool and beautiful”. “I always heard that if you don’t think of anything when you’re modelling, you can really see it, so I always try and have something in my mind to inspire the mood.” More often than not, thinking of Earl will give her a subtle twinkle in her eye.
With an incoming press tour for her HBO drama Irma Vep, in which Devon stars alongside Alicia Vikander, we’re bound to see more of Ross’s own eclectic style. But real talk: how does she nail that insouciant beauty; the kind that gives her an up-all-night vibe while still looking so fresh? Those old-school rockers are to thank again. “I don’t wear much make-up but when I do I add sparkles, like ’60s Mick Jagger.” Micellar water and cotton buds are essential for that immaculate eyeliner execution, “otherwise it can turn into Amy Winehouse quite quickly”. But Devon, it seems, can pull off anything.
